对《德伯家的苔丝》中女主人公的评价

苔丝具有劳动妇女的一切美好品质，坚强、勤劳而富于反抗性，是她性格上的主要特征。自食其力的尊严感和意志使她在困难和磨难面前表现的无比坚强。她对资产阶级社会及其虚伪的道德充满憎恨，并不断与之斗争。她不慕虚荣，思想开明，心地善良。苔丝对宗教的反抗也表现的大胆而坚决。

但苔丝身上仍残留着某些旧道德观念和宿命观点，所以难免会陷入自悲自叹和悲观失望之中。

The subtitle of the novel is a Pure Woman Faithfully Portrayed. All things considered, why Tess is a pure woman? There’re several reasons.
a.“pure” here not refers to the physical meaning, but spiritual one. In victorian society,the highest virtue of the woman is sexual purity,public notions on sexual morals are that woman must remain virgin before marriage,but men could have their fling.In this sense Tess can’t be considered as pure,but why Hardy calls her “a pure woman”?Throughout the novel, Tess was loyal to her true feelings. She remained her loyalty to Angel. Alec only claimed her body. She was spiritually with Angel all the time. In the end,,she killed Alec,she knew killing him seems the only thing left for her to break the mesh of circustances which blinded her,she really did it,her final tragedy is inveitable.
b. She is responsible and does her best for the family. As the eldest child of the family sisters, she has to help the parents to support the whole family. She would sacrifice herself for the sake of the whole family. 1)When the horse was killed,although the real culprit is her father,Tess regarded it as her guilty,her concern for the happiness of her poor parents,brothers and sisters,and her mother’s insistence all played their part in her decision to visit The Slopes in order to “claim kin”.
2)After his father died, the whole family were threatened with starvation. It was Alec who gives much concern and support to her. She went to Alec’s family and came back to Alec.
3)Even when Tess was bound to die in the end,she asked Angle to marry her sister in order to take care of her.
c. She is honest. Tess’ mother adviseed her daughter not to reveal her past to Angel. Yet, Tess thinks that she can deserve the love of Angel only when she tells him about her past.
d. She is brave.She could face her tragedy with great dignity. In the end, she faced her death with great courage.
Many people based on the purity of the pure innocence,no selfishness,no taint of the original meaning view,Tess,only recognize the “purity”in the rational meaning.In any case it is difficult to recognize Tess.In fact,the moral purity is the purity and integrity,which is beyond a specific image of the eternal purity.Because of individual values and attitudes,if we blindly stick to the original meaning of the expense of other values,it is unjustiable.Tess is a pure source of the tragedy,as well as her commitment to the fundamental rebel cause.Tess’s tragedy fate in the numerous protests,the more she resisted,it must tease her fate.In fact,through Tess of protest,we found the hardships of life:poverty is not being overwhelmed Tess.All in all,Tess is a pure girl,a typical woman in that society.
