A magnitude 8.1 earthquake has been recorded in the waters north of Hokkaido, Japan near the Kuril Islands, Russia. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has issued a warning for northern Japan and other parts of the Pacific Basin. However, officials say a damaging tsunami is not expected to hit the western coast of the United States or Canada. Some sections of Oregon Washington Alaska, California, and British Columbia may still experience non-damaging sea level changes.
