加里·奥尔德曼7岁时父亲就离开家庭，因此他由母亲及两个姐姐抚养长大，加里16岁辍学开始工作，从事运动器材的推销。在这期间，他开始阅读学习文学，不久，他遇见了一个戏剧教师，他介绍加里去演戏，从此走上大银幕，加里在30几部电影中塑造的角色大多为反派，《惊情四百年》里为爱放弃信仰的吸血鬼，《杀手莱昂》中戴着耳机听交响乐的坏警察，《空军一号》中沉稳老辣的俄国恐怖分子，但是即使是反派，在他的演绎下，这些反派几乎都有着一种带些许神经质的优雅，古怪中让人不寒而栗，实在是过目难忘。在好莱坞，能演英雄的人举目皆是，但是能把反派演出一种独一无二风格的，恐怕就只有他一个了。

不过别以为私下里的奥尔德曼也是这样神经兮兮，和他合作过的伊萨贝拉·罗西里尼就说：“他所扮演角色多是阴暗的，但与此相反，加里奥德曼是一个可爱的，有趣的家伙。” 不仅是罗西里尼这样认为，大部分和他合作过的演员导演都称赞他除了表演之外，奥尔德曼也是一个很好的人。
