Title: The Investigation and Analysis of the Basic Situation of the Health Service and the Status Quo of the School Doctors (Healthcare Teachers) in the Primary and Middle Schools in Jiangsu Province
Abstract
Objectives: To understand the basic situation of the health service and the status quo of the school doctors (healthcare teachers) in the primary and middle schools in Jiangsu province, and to provide foundation for improving students' health level.
Methods: We conducted a questionnaire survey of all primary and middle schools' healthcare departments and school doctors (healthcare teachers) of the 52 districts and counties of the 13 provicial cities.
Results: 94.0% of the schools include semestral healthcare education in their teaching programs and classroom teaching; 89.6% of the schools organize annual health examinations for students; 90.1% of the schools established students' health examination records; 98.4% of the schools set up emergency handling systems for abrupt public health issues. The age range, which is mostly between 31 and 40 years, of the primary and middle school doctors (healthcare teachers) is fairly good. However, most of the people hold low-rank titles, and few of them have a medical school degree; The number of school doctors doesn't meet the requirement. We found only 43.9% of the schools recruited school doctors (healthcare teachers) with a 600:1 required ratio. More than half of the schools failed to reach this requirement.
Conclusions: The primary and middle school health service of Jiangsu province has developed to a certain level. However, there exist some problems such as severely insufficient school doctors and healthcare professionals, which remain to be improved.

The age composition of infirmary doctors in Primary&Middle schools,which is often from 31 to 40 years old, is nice. However, most of them have lower professional title and few of them graduated from medical school. So the manning of school clinics is below standard. According to the survey, we find only 43.9% of these schools have a school doctor for 600 students and half of all the schools can't meet the standard.
Conclusion~The health care of primary&middle schools in Jiangsu province is begin to take shape, but some conditions, such as the serious shortage of school doctors and specialists in campus health care, still need to be improved.
