UNIVERSIADE 2011 SHENZHEN
2011.8.12-8.22
The mascot
UU, a smiling face transformed from the Universiade logo Happy U, has been chosen as the mascot for the 2011 Universiade to be held in Shenzhen.
The mascot, which symbolizes the open, friendly and tolerant spirit of the Universiade, was unveiled at a ceremony Saturday evening to mark the launch of the city’s second Universiade Cultural Festival.
“The mascot is a cultural symbol of Shenzhen Universiade, and the image embodies the city’s spiritual characters, such as openness, tolerance, youth and fashion,” Shenzhen Party chief Liu Yupu said at the ceremony at Shenzhen Polytechnic.
Olympic gold medalists, diver Guo Jingjing and fencer Zhong Man, attended the ceremony along with 4,000 university students from all over the country.
Liu hoped UU would bring enthusiasm and happiness to university students around the world.
A group of professional national designers highly praised the mascot, which was designed by a Shenzhen-based team of designers who believed UU had broken traditional design trends showing a connection with the International University Sport Federation (FISU) logo.
“The mascot is not human, nor an animal or plant. It is a brave design created by local designers. With a geometric and abstract image, the mascot can also be produced as toys in different materials, including graphic design and animation design,” said Zhao Jian, vice dean of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.
The universiade organizing committee said it began to solicit Universiade mascot designs in January and had received more than 2,000 designs from home and abroad by May 20. Thirty designs were from the United Kingdom, France, Japan and Australia. More than 70 percent of the participants were university students. The oldest contestant was 70 and the youngest only 9. The final 10 universiade mascot candidates were announced August after a six months of public voting
