Tell Me Your New Year Resolutions
Dear readers,
Let’s resume the talk we left on the last time.
I assume you all took a moment looking back on the passing year, celebrating the progress while regretting the unfulfilled goals. Well, the past is history and it will never change. Instead of worrying about yesterday, let’s get prepared to embrace the year 2007~
New Year is always a time for resolutions. As NCE tells us, most of us could mentally compile formidable list of “dos and don’ts”. But our past experience has taught us that certain accomplishments are beyond attainment. Most of us fail in our efforts at self-improvement because our schemes are too ambitious and we never have time to carry them out.
So, let’s be realistic and start from small details. Before setting up new aims, we need to say farewell to our old bad habits, which would drag us behind in the quest of self-improvement.
Say, are you accustomed to being late for morning class? Do you slip back into sleep this morning though you made up your mind last night to do some morning exercise? Do you again lose yourself to tempting food when you are on diet? Do you use thousands of different excuses to put off Read & Recite or any other of your ambitious plans?
Well, you’ve probably heard the expression “A leopard can’t change its spots” or the good old saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. This, of course, is true of leopards and dogs. But that’s just it: we’re the only creatures who have the freedom and power to change and choose the kind of person we want to become.
So, do you not have any control over your actions and habits?
The fact is many of us don’t like to change. So we come up with excuses like: “I can’t be different. That’s just the way I am. I was born this way.” Or we say: “I tried but it doesn’t work. I give up.”
Bad habits are like a comfortable bed. They’re easy to get into, but hard to get out of. And the chains of habits are too small to feel until they’re too strong to break. Breaking the mold of our bad habits does take effort, but won’t you feel it great getting the freedom from bad habits?
Habits are like the roads we take through life everyday. The problem is that not every road takes us to the place we want to go. Actually, our routes through life often become our ruts in life. We end up stuck in them and find it hard to dig ourselves out. Don’t wait till the old bad habits become our second nature that we become eager to get rid of them.
I still remember an old saying in Ancient India: our habits become our character and our character becomes our life. First we make our habits, then our habits make us.
So what old bad habits do you need to leave behind in 2006? What good habits you want to develop at the beginning of 2007?
Here is a “Dos and Don’ts” list I put up for your reference and inspiration. As I said last time, I kindly ask you to come up with your New Year Resolutions. Take your time to read it through and think on your own list, just anything that will contribute to your self-improvement.
You can leave your own list in the comment columns. Don’t feel awkward to announce your new year resolutions to everybody here. It will be a push force for you to become the best person you can possibly be. And we can check on your progress from time to time~
² Don’t put off your plans. Tomorrow will always be there, waiting for your to make the most of it. But you cannot make the most of tomorrow without first making the most of today. Set some goals that are to be achieve during 2007. Make a realistic plan, take one step at a time.
² Don’t quit at failures. Accept the fact that failures are a part of life. We can’t avoid that. Instead of allowing discouragement to taint your positive self-image, why not learn from the experience and become even stronger. Winners never quit. Sometimes they might fail, but their desire to succeed are undefeatable.
² Don’t become indifferent to the grandeur of each day. Don’t hurry to and fro with eyes fixed on the ground, too preoccupied with petty things. Relish the sun's golden glow on your way to work. Admire the beautiful wonders of nature on your trip. Listen to your favorite music after a hectic day, maybe in a bubble bath~ Life could be quite enjoyable if we are not heedless to its splendors. Pleasure can be found in the most simple ways. (Reference: "the art of living" / "Two Truths to Live By")
² Improve self-confidence in public speaking. Look in the mirror to study your manners and the way you present yourself. Practice with yourself till seeing the person in the mirror have a great self-esteem. In 2007, you will step up to speak before the audience at least three times, be it a presentation at workplace or a weekly report in your English class. It’s all right you don’t do perfect, but you do your best.
² Learn a new skill or subject. Learn something new, try something different and welcome new experiences. Don’t miss the various flavors life has to offer. You might face lots of challenges and frustrations, but face them with courage and determination. If you are determined enough, then there is nothing that can hinder your quest for growth and self-improvement. You will overcome whatever barriers there maybe.
² Keep faith and hope. Live with faith in human kindness. Regardless of what has happened in 2006, still believe there is hope for a brighter and better future.
² Be tolerant. Don’t expect perfection from yourself nor anyone else. Perfection does not exist in an imperfect world. Never harbor bitterness. Forgive that person who wronged and hurt you. Love as if you’ve never been hurt. Open your mind and heart.
My new year resolution-新年计划-year end 2006
December 13 2006
(Thankful)
1。写书 Book
Cafe
3。博客 Blog
More projects
This is only the beginning.
