CPT- (Curricular Practical Training)
1. the F-1 student must have been “lawfully enrolled” as a full-time
student for at least one full academic year. Thus, if a student arrives in
August and spend fall and spring at WPI, they can do a CPT the summer after
their 1st year. If they arrive in January, they do not qualify for CPT until the
end of the following winter after they have completed one spring and one
fall semester.
2. The training must be “an integral part of an established curriculum,”
directly related to the student’s field of study and commensurate with the
student’s education level
3. The training may be full-time or part-time. If full-time (more than 20
hours per week) for 12 months or more, the student is not eligible for
Optional Practical Training (see below).
4. CPT employment authorization is duration, employer, and locationspecific.
At WPI undergraduates are eligible for 12-week summer co-op
internships validated by the Career Development Center, and graduate
students are eligible for summer internships for graduate credit with the
consensus of their advisor. Authorization paperwork is coordinated through
the International House.
5. A job offer is required to complete CPT paperwork

OPT- (Optional Practical Training)
1. The F-1 student must have been “lawfully enrolled” as a full-time
student for at least one full academic year.
2. Time spent in an off-campus program (at WPI- IQP/MQP/HUA
programs) during a student’s course of study can be counted towards the
one academic year requirement, as long as the student had previously
studied for one year in F-1 status in the US prior to engaging in the offcampus
program
3. The completed OPT EAD application must be received by USCIS prior to
the completion of study, and so students must begin the process early
enough to allow the International Student Advisor at WPI to update SEVIS and
generate a new I-20, and to ensure the completed I-765 is received by
USCIS.
4. The training must be directly related to the student’s field of study and
commensurate with the student’s educational level
5. The most common OPT is “post-completion” meaning a student begins
the full time work upon completion of their degree
6. No job offer is required to apply for OPT, although students need to find
employment within 90 days of the start date of their OPT in order to “stay in
status.”
7. The training is limited to a maximum of 12 months, per degree level,
although students in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering or math)
are eligible for a one-time 17 month extension of their OPT.
